Melvin "Peerless Mel" Winfield Sheppard, born in Almonesson, New Jersey, won gold medals in the 800 Meter,
1,500 meter and 1,600 meter medley relay at the Olympic Games in London in 1908. In the Olympic Games
at Stockholm in 1912, he won the silver medal in the 800 meter race and gold in the 4 X 400 meter relay.
He is the only athlete in Olympic history to win gold medals in both the 800 meter and 1,500 meter races in the
same Olympic Games. The date and location of this photo are unknown, but it was probably taken at Celtic Park
sometime between 1908 and 1912.
